The Spire is a needle-like monument located on O’Connell Street in Dublin.

Information:

The spire was the winning entry from a competition which proposed a monument to be placed on O’Connell Street during its redevelopment in 1999. The monument is also known as the Monument of Light and stands at 120 meters tall. The Spire was designed by Ian Richie Architects and was constructed in 2002/3, costing approximately €4 million. The monument is made up of eight stainless steel sections and measures 3 meters wide at the base and only 15 centimetres wide at the top. The Spire is located on the site of Nelson’s Pillar, which was destroyed in a bombing in 1966. 

Did you known?

As promotion for the release of the film Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015, the Spire was dressed up to resemble a lightsaber. The base of the monument was covered in a structure resembling the hilt of the lightsaber, while blue lights illuminated the rest of the monument.
